Nichols, born in Rhode Island, was a 19 th-century sailor and smuggler who wrote about his exploits in a 4-section journal. In the journal, Nichols describes his voyages to the West Indies, including smuggling operations in Cuba and Brazil. A longtime member of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of ACRL, she served on its Bibliographic Standards Committee for four terms between 2007 and 2017, and chaired the editorial team which wrote DCRM(MSS). She holds a Ph.D. in English from Cornell and a Masters in Library Science from Syracuse University. Demonstrated experience in applying current archival and special collections descriptive practices and principles, including DACS, RDA, DCRM(MSS) and/or LCSH.

DCRM(MSS) provides guidance for the cataloging of individual manuscripts. The goal during this full-day workshop was to learn the new iteration of DCRM(MSS), the national cataloging standard for manuscripts.
